6:30pm. FREE GUIDED ARTWALK TOUR. The July 1st tour will again introduce participants to wonderfully diverse selection of art. Each artist brings different techniques and styles. The one hour free tour will leave from the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, 390 W. 7th Street, at 6:30 p.m. Come early and enjoy refreshments and and the Artists Reception for the new show, “Young & Abstract”, with recent paintings by Christopher Hernandez, Elizabeth Medina and Eduardo Silva. From the Chamber, the tour will visit Studio 339 to see the work of Hiroko Momii, an artist who paints dilicately layerd abstract work where cell-like structures unite and separate, multiply and divide, appear and dissolve, as though woven throughout pictorial space.Last stop is the Croatian Cultural Center, where the San Pedro Arts Association has an exhibit representing many of their members. On display will be a variety of styles, including abstract and realistic oil and watercolor painting, photography, wearable art, and mixed media, representing the work of about 15 artists.Each month the Artwalk tour starts at 6:30, meeting at the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, 390 W. 7th Street, and follows a different itinerary. General John Sheridan will be the Keynote Speaker at San Pedro’s Community 4th of July Observance, Ringing of the Historic Korean Bell to be a Highlightf. San Pedro’s annual community Independence Day Celebration will be held on Sunday, July 4th, at its traditional location at the scenic Angels Gate Park, home of the Korean Friendship Bell. The Korean Bell, one of San Pedro’s most enduring landmarks, plays a key role in the ceremonial observance. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 AM on Sunday, July 4th, with presentations by local and Korean community leaders. Lt. General John Sheridan from the Space and Missile Systems Center, Air Force Space Command at the Los Angeles Air Force Base will be the keynote speaker. Representing the community bridge between our two cultures, will be the Honorable Consul General, Kim, Jae-Soo, from the Los Angeles Consulate of the Republic of Korea. To conclude the ceremonial portion of the day, John Olguin - Director Emeritus of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and San Pedro’s “Citizen of the Millennium” will lead the audience in reciting the names of the 13 original American states. As he reads the names seven honored representatives of the San Pedro and Korean Communities will strike a battering ram into the massive bell, ringing once for each state. The Korean Bell is rung officially on only four other occasions each year – Korean Independence Day (August 15th) Constitution Day (September 21st), and New Year’s Eve. Expected to join in the observance, will be the Honorable Kim, Jae-Soo - Consul General, Consulate of the Republic of Korea; Steven B. Cho – CW2R California State Military Reserve; representatives of the Advisory Council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification of Korea – L.A. Chapter; the Honorary Mayor of San Pedro – Helene Pizzini; an antique vehicle display by the Ft. MacArthur Military Museum; GSPO vocalist Morgan Logan; as well as, Anthony Pirozzi - San Pedro Chamber of Commerce Board Chair and members of the Long Beach Ko-Am Chamber of Commerce. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic lunches and plan a daylong Independence Day celebration at this scenic hillside park overlooking the ocean. San Pedro’s Annual Fourth of July activities will conclude in the evening with a with a Cabrillo Beach fireworks display presented by the Cabrillo Beach Boosters in collaboration with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Angels Gate Park is located at 3601 South Gaffey Street in San Pedro. This free event, conducted every year since the Korean Bell’s installation in 1976 is sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks; the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce; the Office of Councilwoman Janice Hahn and the Advisory Council on Democratic and Peaceful Unification of Korea, L.A.
