6:30pm. FIRST THURSDAY IN SAN PEDRO, FREE GUIDED ARTWALK TOUR. The June 3rd tour will focus on San Pedro’s galleries hosting a wonderfully diverse selection of photography.  Each artist brings different elements of emotion and reality to the viewer.  The one hour free tour will leave from the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce, 390 W. 7th Street, at 6:30 p.m.  Come early and enjoy refreshments and the serigraphs of Corita Kent, Passion for  the Possible. The tour will visit four galleries.  Polychromaddict: Selected Works by Arnee Carofano at Angels’ Ink.  Carofano’s work includes both digital and Polaroid images presented with a formal clarity and directness that belies their origin in the observation of everyday objects and scenes.  Gil Mares is well known in San Pedro and beyond for the unique and painterly quality of his photographs of freighters in the Port of Los Angeles.  At a glance they may seem to be abstract paintings.  The Ilfochrome photographs are  mounted on aluminum, giving them a brilliant depth of color.  The exhibit is at the studio of Annie Appel Photography.  Findings Art Center presents monthly “Shows for a Cause.”  This month introduces Shay McAtee’s photography exhibit, launching her project featuring the vibrant spirit of autistic children.  The photos in “The Spirit Within” are part of a book project intended to increase awareness about the complexity and individuality of children with autism, as well as to dispel some of the misconceptions and stereotypes. Larry Wiese’s Conjecture is featured at Gallery 478.  Wiese is known for darkly spare images that are rich in tone and evocative of both grace and menace.  Black and white images are moody, and in his color images he utilizes the deliberate palette of a painter. Each month the Artwalk tour starts at 6:30, meets in a different location in downtown San Pedro, and presents a different itinerary.  To receive monthly tour information, contact FirstthursdaySPtour@gmail.com.  Following the one hour tour, visitors will have an opportunity to shop, eat and enjoy the music and ambiance that fill the streets on First Thursday.

Minorities Disproportionately Affected by Chronic Kidney Disease. With more than 30,000 Southern California residents on dialysis due to kidney failure, the need to educate is great. The National Kidney Foundation Serving Southern California and Southern Nevada (NKFSC & SN) urges Los Angeles area residents to learn more about their kidneys and receive a free kidney health risk assessment at the KNBC Alive and Well LA Expo. At the upcoming event, the NKFSC & SN, with support from the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association and Amgen, will educate Los Angeles area residents about chronic kidney disease (CKD), the risk factors for the disease, and the importance of early detection.
Who:         Representatives of the NKFSC & SN and its partners: Chris Johnson – president of the NKF Serving Southern California and Southern Nevada; Dr. Victoria Kumar, Los Angeles nephrologist;  Patient interviews available.
When:          Saturday, June 26, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. AND Sunday, June 27, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Where:        KNBC Alive and Well LA Expo, Los Angeles Convention Center – South Hall K, 1201 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015
Why:             Currently, more than 30,000 Southern California residents have kidney failure and require dialysis .   Most people are unaware that individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes and a family history are at greater risk for CKD. Once someone with chronic kidney disease progresses to kidney failure, dialysis or a kidney transplant are the only remaining treatment options. Hispanics are disproportionately affected by CKD. They are nearly twice as likely to develop the disease as non-Hispanic whites. African-Americans account for more than 30 percent of kidney failure patients and are nearly four times as likely to develop the disease as whites. Twenty-six million Americans have chronic kidney disease, which can lead to kidney failure. Los Angeles area residents who empower themselves with information about CKD can help prevent, identify risk factors and manage the disease and its causes,
